Je suis ce qu’il est convenu d’appeler une femme qui vit avec son temps. Je sais bien qu’à première vue, cela semble anodin. Quoi de plus normal que de vivre avec son époque ?
Mais pour moi, c’est une chance extraordinaire. Je dirais presque un miracle. Car c’est loin d’être le cas pour toutes les femmes qui, comme moi, vivent dans un pays musulman. En l’occurrence l’Algérie. Non, il n’est
pas évident, dans mon pays, d’être une femme épanouie et libre. Et pourtant, je peux dire que je le suis. Mais cela n’a pas toujours été le cas.
Aussi loin que se portent mes souvenirs, je ne vois que frustrations. Beaucoup d’interdits. Enfant déjà, je souffrais d’une
discrimination qui était la règle dans ma famille : mes parents et mes frères commandaient tandis que mes sœurs et moi obéissions. Et en tant que fille aînée, je dois dire que j’ai souffert
bien plus que mes sœurs de cet état de fait. Parce que je leur ai frayé le chemin et que j’ai payé au centuple chacun des empans de liberté que j’ai pu débroussailler dans la jungle d’interdits
qui constituaient notre horizon.
Le poids des traditions que mes parents nous imposaient étaient en totale contradiction avec mes aspirations de liberté. Je ne sais
pas pourquoi, depuis que je suis toute petite, j’ai toujours placé au-dessus de tout la notion de liberté. Sans doute parce que j’en ai constamment été privée.
Petite fille déjà, je me souviens que je n’avais pas le droit de sortir de la maison pour aller jouer dans la cour. Mais mes frères,
quant à eux, sortaient à leur guise. Quand mes parents partaient en visite familiale, c’étaient toujours les garçons qui partaient avec eux. Les filles restaient à la maison.
Quand j’eus l’âge d’aller à l’école, le seul trajet qu’on me permettait de parcourir à l’extérieur était celui qui menait de la
maison à la classe, puis de la classe à la maison, sans aucun détour ni aucune escale. Et puis un jour, j’eus l’âge d’aller au collège. Et mes frères, ou mon père, prirent l’habitude de me
suivre à tour de rôle, discrètement, comme en filature, pour s’assurer que je marchais droit.

Quand l’heure de la puberté sonna, ce fut pire : interdiction formelle de laisser le moindre garçon s’approcher de moi. C’était la
condition sine qua non à la poursuite de mes études. Mes parents (ma mère surtout) me menaçaient de me désinscrire du collège, puis du lycée, s’il s’avérait que je fréquentais un garçon. Tout
cela parce que j’étais dépositaire d’un bien qui ne m’appartenait pas et qui devait à tout prix être préservé : ma virginité. Un bien dont je me serais volontiers passée car il a été une source
d’humiliations intarissables. Les examens gynécologiques qu’on me faisait subir pour s’assurer que mon hymen était toujours intact ont ponctué mon adolescence et n’ont cessé que lorsque je me
suis mariée.
Mes parents n’étaient pas des monstres. Juste des Musulmans qui tenaient à élever leurs enfants dans le respect de leur religion. Je
garde d’ailleurs très peu de rancune pour tout ce qu’ils ont pu me faire subir. Ce n’est pas à eux que j’en veux.
Ceux contre qui ma colère se porte, ce sont les hommes qui dirigent mon pays. Ce sont eux qui en ont fait un enfer en sacrifiant
cette terre meurtrie à une idéologie liberticide et mortifère. Ils ont laissé l’islamisme s’y installer, et pire encore, s’incruster peu à peu dans notre vie quotidienne au point
qu’aujourd’hui, elle la gouverne totalement.
A l’école, dès leur première année d’études, les enfants se voient enseigner le Coran. Les bambins en apprennent par cœur des
chapitres entiers. C’est une matière scolaire qui les suit jusqu’au baccalauréat : en tout, ils subissent cet enseignement religieux sans répit durant dix longues années. Je dis qu’ils le
subissent parce qu’aucune place n’est laissée à la réflexion. Au contraire, les cours de ‘‘sciences islamiques” (on les appelle pompeusement ainsi) sont basés sur la stricte mémorisation. Le
résultat en est une jeunesse acquise à la propagande islamiste. L’école algérienne a d’ailleurs formé pendant la décennie 90 des terroristes à foison pour le sinistre GIA qui a causé la mort,
dans des conditions horribles, de 200 000 personnes. C’est une école qui formate les cerveaux malléables des enfants pour en faire des citoyens incapables de raisonner par eux-mêmes : ils
appliquent à la lettre les préceptes pourtant obsolètes d’une religion qui ne laisse aucune part au libre-arbitre. L’Islam (dont le sens, au propre, est la ‘‘soumission”) leur dicte des lois
infâmes dont ils s’accommodent sans songer qu’elles puissent, un instant, être remises en question. D’ailleurs, il est interdit de se poser des questions sur l’Islam. Je veux dire des questions
pertinentes dont les réponses pourraient ébranler une foi chancelante. Ceux qui réfléchissent sont vite rabroués sous couvert de sacrilège.

de femmes voilées sans trahir la réalité. Sauf en

Cette région, la mienne, est la seule sur laquelle le greffon islamique peine à prendre. Nos femmes s’y voilent aussi, évidemment, mais dans une moindre proportion. Je pense pouvoir
affirmer sans trop me tromper, d’après mes observations, que moins de 50% des femmes et des jeunes filles y portent aujourd’hui le voile. Je fais d’ailleurs partie de celles qui ne le portent pas. Et je serai du nombre des
irréductibles qui ne le porteront jamais.
Je ne comprends pas comment on peut admettre ou envisager que des femmes, en Europe ou en Amérique, puissent être autorisées à porter le voile ou la burqa. A mes
yeux, c’est un non-sens.
J’ai suivi avec beaucoup d’attention la polémique sur le port du voile ou de la burka dans les pays occidentaux. En France, en
Belgique, au Canada et ailleurs, des voix se sont élevées pour s’exprimer à ce sujet. Je ne comprends pas comment on peut admettre ou envisager que des femmes, en Europe ou en Amérique, puissent être autorisées à le porter. A mes yeux, c’est un
non-sens. Qu’on veuille ainsi revêtir un linceul dans un pays où on est libre de s’habiller à sa guise me chagrine. Oui, je déplore cet état de fait car moi, qui vis en pays musulman et qui
aimerais bien pouvoir m’habiller librement, je suis obligée de subir au quotidien des injures en tout genre parce que je ne me voile pas. Je ne veux pas faire partie du troupeau qui porte le
hijab par conviction ou par contrainte. Je suis une femme et je veux assumer pleinement ma féminité sans la moindre brimade, vestimentaire ou autre.
Je n’arrive pas à comprendre comment autant de femmes ont pu se laisser convaincre que leur féminité était honteuse et qu’il fallait la dissimuler. Ces femmes ont si vite abdiqué. Elles ont admis avec une facilité déconcertante que le péché n’est
pas dans le regard concupiscent des hommes qui les convoitent mais dans leur impudeur à elles, et pour cette raison, elles ont fini par accepter de vivre couvertes en permanence.

mes bras. Parce que je fais plus que ne pas me voiler la tête : je ne couvre pas chaque cm2 de ma peau comme si le simple fait de laisser entrevoir une jambe était un outrage à la
pudeur.
Vous l’avez compris : je ne suis pas une femme acquise aux thèses religieuses selon lesquelles je devrais me conformer à des mœurs
vestimentaires aliénantes. Je suis une personne instruite et active. J’exerce avec passion mon métier d’enseignante et je gagne dignement ma vie. Je sors à ma guise, fréquente des amis que j’ai
choisis, aussi bien des hommes que des femmes. Je prends
mes décisions moi-même, je dispose comme il me plaît de mon temps. Je vis. Ou plutôt, je vis enfin. Car tout cela est relativement nouveau pour moi.
Pendant les vingt premières années de ma vie, ce sont mes parents et mes frères qui tiraient les ficelles de mon destin. Puis ce fut
un premier mari, très brutal, qui m’a fait vivre cloîtrée pendant neuf longues années. Les violences domestiques, les coups, les humiliations, tout cela a constitué mon lot quotidien des années
durant. Et puis un jour, j’ai décidé que c’en était trop. Mais j’ai dû lutter pendant trois autres années pour obtenir un divorce que je demandais unilatéralement. Le code de la famille n’est
pas tendre avec les femmes en Algérie. Un juge a le droit
de vous forcer à retourner chez votre tortionnaire : à partir du moment où ce dernier est votre époux, il a tous les droits sur vous. Et s’il ne veut pas divorcer, vous êtes contrainte de
continuer à partager sa vie. Mais je me suis battue. Et un beau jour, j’ai obtenu mon divorce.

Mais je ne m’en suis pas rendue compte à temps. J’étais trop occupée par mes propres souffrances. Constamment surveillée, traitée comme une domestique, victime d’abus sexuels au sein de ma
propre famille, je n’ai pas tardé à sombrer dans une profonde dépression. Mon état s’est tellement dégradé qu’il a été question de m’interner en milieu psychiatrique. A la maison, on ne
m’appelait pas par mon prénom. On m’appelait ‘‘l’autre”.
Et pendant que je luttais désespérément contre la folie, mes filles subissaient à leur tour des abus sexuels de la part d’un oncle
lubrique qui les terrorisait. La grande avait sept ans. La petite quatre ans et demi. Mais tout cela, je ne l’ai su que plus tard. Le mal était fait. Il m’a fallu suivre deux psychothérapies
pour surmonter mon désespoir. Ma fille cadette, aujourd’hui âgée de vingt ans, voit un psychiatre chaque lundi. Elle souffre de gros troubles du caractère et du comportement. Elle et sa sœur
ont connu l’enfer. Comme moi, elles ont trouvé refuge dans le déni. Nous essayons de faire comme si tout cela n’était jamais arrivé. Comme si ça n’avait été qu’un mauvais rêve. Mais ce
cauchemar vient encore hanter nos nuits. C’est une douleur indélébile.
Et puis un jour, un homme a croisé mon chemin. Un homme bon. Un homme envoyé par la providence pour me sauver et me sortir de cet
enfer. Il m’a épousée sans chercher à me séparer de mes filles. Il les a acceptées sans me poser la moindre condition à leur sujet. Hélas, en apprenant que je refaisais ma vie, mon ex-mari a
intenté une action en justice contre moi pour demander qu’on me retire la garde de mes enfants. Et j’ai dû de nouveau me battre contre nos lois misogynes pour empêcher que deux innocentes
créatures soient obligées d’aller vivre avec leur tortionnaire de père ou leur grand-mère indigne. Car le code de la famille algérien, directement inspiré de la charia, stipule qu’en cas de
remariage de la mère, la garde des enfants doit échoir en premier lieu à la grand-mère ou aux tantes maternelles, et à défaut, au père.
Pour qu’on ne me prenne pas mes enfants, j’ai écumé les tribunaux pendant des années. Je n’ai jamais obtenu gain de

moment de cette anecdote) et qui avait sans scrupule répudié deux de ses épouses enceintes. Le juge m’avait alors répondu : « Taisez-vous, il peut épouser 40 femmes si ça lui chante et c’est son droit de divorcer de chacune d’elles !
»
Mais j’ai tenu bon, et j’ai gagné à l’usure. Certes, je n’ai pas pu empêcher qu’on me retire la garde de mes enfants, qui ont été
officiellement confiées à ma mère. D’ailleurs, jusqu’à présent, le jugement du tribunal atteste que mes filles vivent chez leur grand-mère maternelle. Mais j’ai bravé l’autorité de ce document
et elles vivent aujourd’hui chez moi, où elles essaient de se reconstruire, comme moi.
Je voudrais terminer ce témoignage en rendant grâce à mon mari actuel, celui qui m’a aidée à m’en sortir. C’est un homme formidable

tutelle masculine. Il ne croit pas que le corps d’une femme doive être recouvert d’amples tissus qui cachent la peau et les rondeurs. Au contraire, il a le hijab en horreur. Mon mari aime me
voir porter des tenues légères. Que cela déplaise aux autres l’indiffère totalement. Il a réalisé mon rêve de passer le permis de conduire puis il a épuisé toutes ses économies pour m’acheter
une voiture avec laquelle il m’encourage à sortir pour aller où je veux. Il ne me surveille pas, il a une totale confiance en moi et s’occupe de mes filles comme si c’étaient les
siennes.
Je voudrais le remercier pour tout ce qu’il me donne parce que je sais ce qu’il lui en coûte. Dans notre société, un homme aussi
libéral avec sa femme est très mal vu. Il subit des remarques vexantes, des critiques et même, parfois, des insultes et des agressions physiques. Combien de fois s’est-il entendu dire : « Tu
n’as pas d’honneur, tu n’es pas un homme !»
C’est malheureux à dire mais c’est comme ça : tous ces hommes qui ont droit de nous opprimer, nous les femmes d’Algérie et des autres pays musulmans, ont
par ailleurs celui de nous émanciper.
On le montre du doigt parce qu’il est gentil avec moi et qu’il ne me musèle pas. Mais personne ne peut rien à cela. Car en tant
qu’époux, il est, certes, libre de m’assujettir comme bon lui semblerait. Mais de la même façon, il a le pouvoir de me libérer. Un peu à la manière du bon maître qui affranchirait son esclave.
C’est malheureux à dire mais c’est comme ça : tous ces hommes qui ont droit de nous opprimer, nous les femmes d’Algérie et des autres pays musulmans, ont par ailleurs celui de nous émanciper. Nos pères, nos frères, nos oncles, nos maris puis nos
fils, tous les mâles de notre famille, ce sont eux qui tirent les ficelles de notre vie. Ainsi veut l’Islam.
Alors quand par miracle, un homme doué de suffisamment de raison pour remettre en question ce dogme misogyne veut bien vous en
délivrer, alors seulement, vous devenez, comme moi aujourd’hui, une femme libre parmi les femmes opprimées.
